Mod Color Study

Mod Color Study
Color Study inspiration from Joseph Albers

I pinned my first Joseph Albers photo about 5 years ago. At the time I thought, one day I’ll make a quilt using this type of layout. When I saw Jacquie Gering’s quilt from 2013 in a copy of Curated Quilts Issue 6, it sparked my interest again. I started small making a mini quilt.

Albers Inspired mini quilt

The result from the mini quilt was just what I was hoping for. Jacquie’s quilt was all reds, corals and yellows but I just didn’t have many of those colors. My stash is sorely lacking in the red/ burgundy colors. There was no option of going to the quilt store for fabric during the making of my quilt. Seattle and the outlying areas were in the midst of a major snow storm. 16 inches at my house which meant, I was pulling fabric from my stash only. In reality, that’s a good thing. I find I am way more creative when limitations are imposed on my designs. It forces me to stay within confined parameters, meaning I don’t get stuck spinning my wheels not accomplishing anything.

Making Mod Color Study

In Joseph Albers Color Study paintings he uses the same one color in each square but changes the surrounding colors which then create a different color story depending upon what colors lay next to each other. I chose Spark Gold to play with. I love the way the gold changes upon it’s placement.

I chose the free motion quilting design based on a pin I found on Pinterest by www.crochetingneedles.com. The design mirrors the Midwest Modern Matini fabric by Amy butler on the back of the quilt. I don’t mark my fabric for quilting. Sometimes things line up sometimes they don’t. My spacing was a bit inconsistent so I added another line of stitching in one place which made me overly critical of all the other line. At that point I told myself to walk away.

The Spark Gold binding again picks up the theme of playing off the gold color.
