Twisted by Diana Lasater

Twisted is a bright exploration of color, the result of a class called Pathways with Melissa Carraway at Quilted Strait. I learned about curved piecing and the stack style of cutting. Melissa is a wonderful teacher with a calm easy approach to quilting. Very much my learning style.

Color selection was the hardest part for most in the class. Melissa had an informal meeting at the shop to help with the selection but I was otherwise occupied. We were directed to bring colors that support each other in light, medium, and dark values. I chose a fun balance of warm and cool colors in my favorite prints then added whatever worked from my stash. I did not buy any fabric for this quilt. Darn, I admit I bought the binding fabric after the quilt was done.

I chose a 14″ square to start with. 6 fabric were stacked together to cut at one time. Our design was sketched on freezer paper then ironed onto the first piece of fabric in the stack. Once cut you move each piece of fabric so that each block has all the fabrics present.

When finished I had 18 blocks. Enough to make a 4×4 square quilt with 2 left over for the back. I was considering making 2 more blocks to make a nice lap quilt but, then I asked myself, ‘What if I threw in a few solid squares?’

It’s all about placement in with the Pathways design. It seems like there is an endless amount of options for layout. Here you can see the auditioning of some color options for the solids. I would lay it out and take a few pictures to get a different perspective. I just kept twisting things around till it worked well for my eye. I did try a few prints but in the end the solids were best suited to the design.

Most often I piece my quilt backs. This time I chose a solid or I should say single fabric for the back. I had been saving this to make a garment for myself but I felt it was the best choice for the back. The Alison Glass print was just wide enough to cover the back.

Twisted also went camping with me at Fort Flagler this month.

Happy sewing!
